Health And Safety Policy
Gardeners Grove Park Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Grove Park is committed to providing gardening and grounds care services in a way that protects the health, safety and wellbeing of our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public. We recognise that gardening and landscape work involve physical activity, tools, machinery and exposure to outdoor environments, and we are dedicated to managing these risks responsibly.
This policy sets out our approach to health and safety across all services we provide, including garden maintenance, landscaping, planting, lawn care and related outdoor work at residential, commercial and communal sites.
Policy Aims and Objectives
The primary aim of this Health and Safety policy is to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property or the environment arising from our gardening activities. We will do this by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing sensible, practical control measures that support safe working.
Our objectives are to:
Promote a positive safety culture where safe behaviour is expected and supported.
Ensure that all work is planned and carried out with health and safety as a core priority.
Provide appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision to enable staff to work safely and competently.
Maintain tools, plant and equipment in safe working order and use them in line with manufacturer guidance.
Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses to prevent recurrence and continually improve.
Responsibilities for Health and Safety
Overall responsibility for health and safety within Gardeners Grove Park rests with the management team, who will ensure this policy is implemented, reviewed and communicated.
Managers and supervisors are responsible for:
Planning tasks to minimise risk and disruption at client sites.
Ensuring risk assessments and method statements are completed where appropriate.
Providing and enforcing the use of personal protective equipment.
Checking that staff are suitably trained and competent for their roles.
Monitoring working practices and correcting unsafe behaviour or conditions.
All employees and contractors are responsible for:
Taking reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions.
Following safe systems of work, instructions and training provided.
Using protective equipment and tools correctly and reporting defects immediately.
Reporting accidents, near misses and hazards promptly.
Cooperating with management to enable all legal and company health and safety requirements to be met.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Gardeners Grove Park will carry out proportionate risk assessments for gardening and landscape tasks, taking account of the specific site conditions, client requirements and the nature of the work. Where necessary, written assessments and method statements will be prepared and communicated to staff.
Safe systems of work will be developed and followed for higher risk activities, which may include the use of powered machinery, working at height, handling heavy loads, applying garden products and working near water, roads or public areas.
Use of Tools, Machinery and Equipment
We will select tools and machinery that are suitable for professional gardening tasks and maintain them in good condition. Equipment will be inspected regularly, and defective items will be removed from use until repaired or replaced.
Only trained and authorised personnel will operate powered machinery such as lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, chainsaws and other specialist equipment. Operators must follow manufacturer instructions and adhere to site-specific controls such as restricted zones, barriers or timing of work to reduce disturbance and risk to others.
Personal Protective Equipment
Gardeners Grove Park will provide appropriate personal protective equipment for the tasks undertaken. This may include, where relevant, safety footwear, gloves, eye and hearing protection, high-visibility clothing, respiratory protection and weather-appropriate clothing.
Employees must use the equipment provided, look after it properly and report loss or damage so that replacements can be arranged promptly.
Manual Handling and Physical Work
Gardening often involves lifting, carrying and repetitive movements. We will plan work to avoid or reduce manual handling risks by using mechanical aids, team lifting and sensible load limits wherever practicable.
Staff will receive guidance on correct lifting techniques, safe posture, task rotation and the importance of warming up and pacing work, especially during intensive gardening periods and in extreme weather conditions.
Chemicals, Substances and Environmental Hazards
Where garden products or other substances are used, Gardeners Grove Park will ensure they are assessed and stored, handled and applied safely. Only trained personnel will use such products, following manufacturer instructions and relevant safety data information.
We will manage exposure to environmental hazards such as sun, heat, cold, uneven ground, sharp vegetation and insects by planning work times, using protective clothing, providing rest breaks and encouraging sensible hydration and self-care.
Working With Clients and the Public
Our teams frequently work in occupied gardens, shared outdoor spaces and public areas. We will take reasonable steps to ensure that clients, visitors, neighbours and passers-by are not exposed to avoidable risk arising from our activities.
This may include using warning signs, barriers or cones where needed, managing vehicle movements carefully, avoiding trailing cables in walkways and scheduling high-risk tasks at suitable times. We will communicate courteously with clients regarding any safety-related restrictions or temporary access arrangements.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, cases of ill health, near misses and dangerous occurrences that arise in connection with Gardeners Grove Park work must be reported as soon as possible to a supervisor or manager.
Incidents will be recorded, reviewed and, where appropriate, investigated so that lessons can be learned and corrective actions taken. Emergency arrangements, including first aid provision and communication procedures, will be made for each work site, taking account of its specific layout and access.
Training, Consultation and Continuous Improvement
We are committed to providing suitable health and safety training for all staff, both at induction and as refresher or specialist training when roles, equipment or methods change. Training will cover the key risks associated with gardening and landscape work, safe systems of work, emergency procedures and company expectations.
Gardeners Grove Park encourages open communication about health and safety. Employees are invited to raise concerns, improvements or suggestions, and these will be considered in regular reviews of our arrangements.
This Health and Safety policy will be reviewed periodically, and whenever there are significant changes in the nature of our work, the services we provide or relevant legal requirements, to ensure it remains suitable, effective and aligned with our commitment to safe, responsible gardening services.
